The inaugural Singapore Grand Prix will take the championship into uncharted territory, as Formula 1 races at night for the first time.
Keen to break into new markets, but also concerned about having too many races at unsociable times for the core European audience, Bernie Ecclestone urged the Singapore organisers to consider an evening GP.
Just to make the Singapore race an even more enticing prospect, it will also take place on a brand new street track.
Floodlighting the entire 3.148-mile circuit will be a major undertaking.
The organisers aim to create an unprecedented spectacle, while ensuring that the drivers have as much visibility as they would in daylight hours.
The concept has received an enthusiastic welcome from the paddock, although some have reserved judgement until they are convinced that the scheme does not compromise safety.
The circuit will be based around Singapore's Marina Bay area, and – like fellow 2008 street tracks Monte Carlo and Valencia – its layout runs along the harbourside as well as sweeping between the city's skyscrapers.
The Singapore authorities believe F1's arrival will be a huge boost to the region, especially with the additional worldwide media attention that the night race concept will earn.
